Do You Need a Car to Live in Los Angeles When Renting a Room?
One of the most practical questions for anyone new to LA — and the honest answer depends entirely on where you live and work.
When you can live without a car in LA:
- You rent a room near a Metro Rail line (A, B, C, D, E or K Line)
- You work remotely or your employer is near a Metro station
- You live in a walkable neighborhood like Koreatown, Downtown LA, Hollywood or Culver City
- You are comfortable with longer travel times and using a combination of Metro, bus and rideshare
When a car is essentially necessary:
- You rent a room in the San Fernando Valley, South Bay or East LA suburbs
- Your workplace is not near public transport
- You need to carry equipment, instruments or large items regularly
- Your social life and activities are spread across different parts of the city
If you do have a car:
- Always ask whether parking is included in the rent — in many LA neighborhoods, street parking is permit-restricted and private parking spots add $100–$250/month to your costs
- Check the street cleaning schedule for the block — parking tickets are common for new arrivals who miss the signs
